RESUMO

What is already known about this topic?: The level of molybdenum (Mo) in a mother's urine has been linked to the growth rate of the fetus and the blood pressure levels in children. What is added by this report?: We evaluated the variations in maternal plasma Mo concentrations throughout pregnancy and their potential association with the risk of spontaneous preterm birth (SPB). What are the implications for public health practice?: Future research must determine the Mo levels in pregnant women across various regions in China. Moreover, particular attention needs to be given to the potential increase in Mo concentration throughout pregnancy and its possible adverse impacts on the health of both the mother and the fetus.

RESUMO

Cobalt oxyhydroxide (CoOOH) is a promising catalytic material for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In the traditional CoOOH structure, Co3+ exhibits a low-spin state configuration ([Formula: see text]), with electron transfer occurring in face-to-face [Formula: see text] orbitals. In this work, we report the successful synthesis of high-spin state Co3+ CoOOH structure, by introducing coordinatively unsaturated Co atoms. As compared to the low-spin state CoOOH, electron transfer in the high-spin state CoOOH occurs in apex-to-apex [Formula: see text] orbitals, which exhibits faster electron transfer ability. As a result, the high-spin state CoOOH performs superior OER activity with an overpotential of 226 mV at 10 mA cm-2, which is 148 mV lower than that of the low-spin state CoOOH. This work emphasizes the effect of the spin state of Co3+ on OER activity of CoOOH based electrocatalysts for water splitting, and thus provides a new strategy for designing highly efficient electrocatalysts.

RESUMO

Introduction: Spontaneous preterm birth (SPB) is a significant cause of neonatal mortality, yet its etiology remains unclear. Cobalt, an essential trace element, might be a risk factor for SPB. This study aims to investigate the relationship between maternal serum cobalt concentration and SPB, and to clarify the role of blood lipids and fasting blood glucose (FBG) in this relationship. Methods: We conducted a nested case-control study within the Beijing Birth Cohort Study. Serum samples were obtained from 222 pregnant women with SPB and 224 controls during the first (7-13 weeks of pregnancy) and third trimesters (32-42 weeks of pregnancy). Serum cobalt concentration was determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Fasting blood glucose and lipids levels were detected using a fully automated biochemical immunoassay instrument. Logistic regression models and linear regression models were established to explore the association between serum cobalt concentration and the risk of SPB in pregnant women, and to test the mediating effect of fasting blood glucose (FBG) and lipids. Results: We found that the serum cobalt concentration in mothers with SPB and controls was similar in the first trimester, with values of 0.79 (0.58-1.10) ng/mL and 0.75 (0.51-1.07) ng/mL, respectively. However, in the third trimester, the cobalt concentration increased to 0.88 (0.59-1.14) ng/mL and 0.84 (0.52-1.19) ng/mL, respectively. In the logistic regression model, when considering the third trimester of pregnancy, after adjusting for ethnicity, pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI), maternal age, education, income, and parity, it was observed that the medium level of cobalt concentration (0.63-1.07 ng/ml) had a negative correlation with the risk of SPB. The odds ratio (OR) was 0.56, with a 95% confidence interval of 0.34-0.90 ng/mL and a p-value of 0.02. This suggests that cobalt in this concentration range played a protective role against SPB. Additionally, it was found that FBG in the third trimester of pregnancy had a partial intermediary role, accounting for 9.12% of the association. However, no relationship between cobalt and SPB risk was found in the first trimester. Conclusion: During the third trimester, intermediate levels of maternal cobalt appear to offer protection against SPB, with FBG playing a partial mediating role. To further clarify the optimal cobalt concentrations during pregnancy for different populations, a multi-center study with a larger sample size is necessary. Additionally, exploring the specific mechanism of FBG's mediating role could provide valuable insights for improving the prevention of SPB.

RESUMO

Electrochemical water splitting to generate hydrogen energy fills a gap in the intermittency issues for wind and sunlight power. Transition metal (TM) oxides have attracted significant interest in water oxidation due to their availability and excellent activity. Typically, the transitional metal oxyhydroxides species derived from these metal oxides are often acknowledged as the real catalytic species, due to the irreversible structural reconstruction. Hence, in order to innovatively design new catalyst, it is necessary to provide a comprehensive understanding for the origin of surface reconstruction. In this review, the most recent developments in the reconstruction of transition metal-based oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysts were introduced, and various chemical driving forces behind the reconstruction mechanism were discussed. At the same time, specific strategies for modulating pre-catalysts to achieve controllable reconfiguration, such as metal substituting, increase of structural defect sites, were summarized. At last, the issues for the further understanding and optimization of transition metal oxides compositions based on structural reconstruction were provided.

RESUMO

A coupled oxygen evolution mechanism (COM) during oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has been reported in nickel oxyhydroxides (NiOOH)-based materials by realizing eg* band (3d electron states with eg symmetry) broadening and light irradiation. However, the link between the eg* band broadening extent and COM-based OER activities remains unclear. Here, Ni1-xFexOOH (x = 0, 0.05, 0,2) are prepared to investigate the underlying mechanism governing COM-based activities. It is revealed that in low potential region, realizing stronger eg* band broadening could facilitate the *OH deprotonation. Meanwhile, in high potential region where the photon utilization is the rate-determining step, a stronger eg* band broadening would widen the non-overlapping region between dz2 and a1g* orbitals, thereby enhancing photon utilization efficiency. Consequently, a stronger eg* band broadening could effectuate more efficient OER activities. Moreover, we demonstrate the universality of this concept by extending it to reconstruction-derived X-NiOOH (X = NiS2, NiSe2, Ni4P5) with varying extent of eg* band broadening. Such an understanding of the COM would provide valuable guidance for the future development of highly efficient OER electrocatalysts.

RESUMO

Purpose: The association of physical activity with the risk of bladder cancer remains inconsistent among Asian populations. We aimed to examine the association in a large Japanese cohort. Materials and Methods: In a population-based prospective cohort study, a total of 50,374 Japanese adults aged 40-79 years without a history of cancer or cardiovascular disease who had information on physical activity from self-administrated questionnaires were used for analysis. We performed Cox proportional hazard models to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for incident bladder cancer after adjusting for several potential confounders. Results: During the median 17.5 years of follow-up, 153 incident bladder cancers (116 men and 37 women) were identified. After the multivariable adjustment, HRs (95% CI) of bladder cancer concerning those with recreational sports participation of 1-2 hours/week, 3-4 hours/week, and 5 hours/week and more were 0.67 (0.38-1.20), 0.79 (0.36-1.74), and 0.28 (0.09-0.89), respectively (p for trend=0.017). Compared with mostly sitting at the workplace, occupational physical activity of standing and walking were associated with a lower risk of bladder cancer (HR: 0.53 [95%CI: 0.32-0.85]). Hours of daily walking were not associated with the risk. The lower risk of bladder cancer was more evident for recreational sports (HR: 0.33 [95% CI: 0.10, 1.00]), and for occupational standing and walking activity at work (HR: 0.57 [95% CI: 0.33, 0.98]) among men. Conclusion: Recreational sports participation and occupational physical activity were inversely associated with the risk of bladder cancer among Japanese, especially in men.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Parental exposure to rare earth elements (REEs) could increase the risk of premature rupture of membranes, a major cause of spontaneous preterm birth (SPB). In addition, different subtypes of SPB, such as spontaneous preterm labor (SPL) and preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM), may have different susceptibility to environmental exposure. Therefore, we investigated the potential associations between REE exposure in different trimesters and SPB and its subtypes. METHODS: A nested case-control study was performed. We included 244 women with SPB as cases and 244 women with full-term delivery as controls. The plasma concentrations of light REEs were measured in the first and third trimesters. Logistic regression was used to analyze the associations between single REE levels and SPB, and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) was used to analyze the mixed-exposure effect. RESULTS: Exposure to light REEs was associated with SPB and its subtypes only in the third trimester. Specifically, the intermediate- and highest-tertile concentration groups of La and the highest-tertile concentration group of Sm were associated with an increased risk of SPL, with adjusted odds ratios (AORs) of 2.00 (95% CIs: 1.07-3.75), 1.87 (95% CIs: 1.01-3.44), and 1.82 (95% CIs: 1.00-3.30), respectively. The highest-tertile concentration group of Pr was associated with an increased risk of PPROM, with an AOR of 1.69 (95% CIs: 1.00-2.85). Similar results were also found in BKMR models. CONCLUSIONS: La and Sm levels in plasma may be associated with the risk of SPL, and Pr levels in plasma may be associated with the risk of PPROM.

RESUMO

This study explored the potential association between age at menarche and the risks of gestational hypertension and preeclampsia in Chinese women. Data were sourced from the China-US Collaborative Project for Neural Tube Defects Prevention, a large population-based cohort study. Our study consisted of 209 411 women pre-registered for pregnancy in two provinces in South China. Trained healthcare workers measured blood pressure at registration and recorded other pertinent health information. Using logistic regression, we assessed the correlations between age at menarche and the likelihood of developing gestational hypertension and preeclampsia, considering confounders such as maternal age, body mass index, ethnicity, parity, folic acid supplementation, education level, and occupation. The observed incidences for gestational hypertension and preeclampsia were 9.65% and 2.54%, respectively. The adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for gestational hypertension, based on age at menarche, were as follows: ≤13 years, 1.18 (95% confidence interval: 1.11-1.26); 14 years, 1.09 (1.04-1.15); 15 years, 1.11 (1.06-1.16); 16 years, 1.06 (1.01-1.12); and ≥17 years, 1.00 (reference; P for trend < .001). The correlation between age at menarche and preeclampsia varied across age groups, with the following respective ORs: 1.35 (1.20-1.52), 1.21 (1.09-1.34), 1.27 (1.15-1.39), 1.14 (1.03-1.26), and 1.00 (reference; P for trend < .001). This association appeared to be more pronounced in women with no folic acid supplementation and those with a lower education level. In conclusion, an earlier age at menarche seems to be linked to increased risks of gestational hypertension and preeclampsia.

RESUMO

Rubber is widely recognized as an important material, whose irreplaceable applications range from damping materials to tires. Generally, rubber is vulnerable to oxidative degradation, leading to a deterioration in the material's performance. Therefore, antioxidants are often added to extend the service life of rubber. In this study, crude lignin-based carbon dots (CLCDs) were prepared by a simple hydrothermal treatment of lignin with H2O2 and triethylenetetramine. The thus prepared CLCDs exhibit excellent radical scavenging capability, and were incorporated into natural rubber with vinyl pyridine-styrene-butadiene terpolymer (VPR) as coupling agent. The results revealed that CLCDs could endow NR with excellent antioxidative performance. Interestingly, CLCDs even show superior antioxidant effect towards rubber compared to purified lignin-based carbon dots (PLCDs). This work provides a unique source of inspiration for the preparation of low-cost, highly effective CLCDs from plant biomass waste, most of lignin being used to produce steam and energy, with excellent antioxidant capability for rubber, which is beneficial for a green and sustainable world.

RESUMO

What is already known about this topic?: Interpregnancy intervals (IPIs) that are either excessively long or short have been linked with an elevated risk of adverse perinatal outcomes. Presently, no pertinent guidelines have been established in China to provide clear direction with regard to optimal IPI. What is added by this report?: A brief interpregnancy interval may elevate the risk of miscarriage, postpartum hemorrhage, and fetal distress among expectant women. What are the implications for public health practice?: These results could inform prenatal consultations, guiding pregnant women towards an ideal interpregnancy interval of no less than 24 months.

RESUMO

Background: Recent studies have found that patients with incurable gastric cancer might benefit from palliative gastrectomy, but the impact of palliative gastrectomy on metastatic early-onset gastric cancer (mEOGC) patients remains unclear. Methods: We analyzed mEOGC patients enrolled in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results registry from January 2004 to December 2018. Propensity score matching (PSM) analysis with 1:1 matching and the nearest-neighbor matching method were used to ensure well-balanced characteristics between the groups of patients with palliative gastrectomy and those without surgery. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to evaluate the overall survival (OS) and cause-specific survival (CSS) risk with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: Of 3641 mEOGC patients, 442 (12.1%) received palliative gastrectomy. After PSM, 596 patients were included in the analysis, with 298 in each group. For the matched cohort, the median survival was 8 months, and the 5-year survival was 4.0%. The median OS of mEOGC patients undergoing palliative gastrectomy was significantly longer than that of patients without surgery (13 months vs. 6 months, p < 0.001), and palliative gastrectomy remained an independent protective factor after adjusting for confounders (HR 0.459, 95% CI 0.382-0.552, p < 0.001), and the protective effect was robust in the subgroup analysis. Similar results were indicated in CSS. Stratified analyses by treatment modality also warranted the superiority of palliative-gastrectomy-based treatment in improving OS and CSS. Conclusions: mEOGC patients with palliative gastrectomy had a significantly longer survival time than patients without surgery. Exploratory analysis confirmed that surgery-based therapy modality was superior in improving survival time.

RESUMO

A comprehensive understanding of surface reconstruction was critical to developing high performance lattice oxygen oxidation mechanism (LOM) based perovskite electrocatalysts. Traditionally, the primary determining factor of the surface reconstruction process was believed to be the oxygen vacancy formation energy. Hence, most previous studies focused on optimizing composition to reduce the oxygen vacancy formation energy, which in turn facilitated the surface reconstruction process. Here, for the first time, we found that adding oxyanions (SO4 2- , CO3 2- , NO3 - ) into the electrolyte could effectively regulate the solid-liquid interface, significantly accelerating the surface reconstruction process and enhancing oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activities. Further studies indicated that the added oxyanions would adsorb onto the solid-liquid interface layer, disrupting the dynamic equilibrium between the adsorbed OH- ions and the OH- ions generated during surface reconstruction process. As such, the OH- ions generated during surface reconstruction process could be more readily released into the electrolyte, thereby leading to an acceleration of the surface reconstruction. Thus, it was expected that our finding would provide a new layer of understanding to the surface reconstruction process in LOM-based perovskite electrocatalysts.

RESUMO

AIMS: A subset of IgA nephropathy (IgAN) patients exhibiting minimal change disease (MCD) like features present with nephrotic-range proteinuria and warrants immunosuppressive therapy (IST). However, the diagnosis of MCD-like IgAN varied by reports. We aimed to identify the key pathological features of MCD-like IgAN. METHODS: In this cohort, 228 patients had biopsy-proven IgAN from 2009 to 2021, of which 44 without segmental sclerosis were enrolled. Patients were classified into segmental (< 50% glomerular capillary loop involvement) or global (> 50%) foot process effacement (FPE) groups. We further stratified them according to the usage of immunosuppressant therapy after biopsy. Clinical manifestations, treatment response, and renal outcome were compared. RESULTS: 26 cases (59.1%) were classified as segmental FPE group and 18 cases (40.9%) as global FPE group. The global FPE group had more severe proteinuria (11.48 [2.60, 15.29] vs. 0.97 [0.14, 1.67] g/g, p = 0.001) and had a higher proportion of complete remission (81.8% vs. 20%, p = 0.018). In the global FPE group, patients without IST experienced more rapid downward eGFR change than the IST-treated population (-0.38 [-1.24, 0.06] vs. 1.26 [-0.17, 3.20]mL/min/1.73 m2/month, p = 0.004). CONCLUSIONS: The absence of segmental sclerosis and the presence of global FPE are valuable pathological features that assist in identifying MCD-like IgAN.

RESUMO

Aerogels are becoming a promising platform to fabricate photothermal materials for use in solar steam generation (SSG), which have remarkable application potential in solar desalination, due to their excellent thermal management, salt resistance, and considerable water evaporation rate. In this work, a novel photothermal material is fabricated by forming a suspension between sugarcane bagasse fibers (SBF) and poly(vinyl alcohol), tannic acid (TA), and Fe3+ solutions via hydrogen bonds of hydroxyl groups. After freeze drying, the fabricated SBF aerogel-based photothermal (SBFAP) material possesses a 3D interconnected porous microstructure, which could enhance water transportation ability, reduce thermal conductivity, and quickly dissolve salt crystals on the SBFAP surface. Thanks to the formation of micro/nanosized complexes between TA and Fe3+ ions on the SBFAP material, the SBFAP exhibits high light capture and water evaporation rate (2.28 kg m-2 h-1). In particular, due to strong hydrogen bonding and the SBF, the SBFAP material is reinforced, thereby exhibiting excellent structural stability in seawater. Moreover, the high salt tolerance of SBFAP favors its high desalination performance for at least 76 days of continuous evaporation under actual conditions. This research paves the way for the fabrication of natural cellulose fiber-based photothermal materials for application in solar desalination.

RESUMO

Background: Nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (NVP) is one of the most common pregnancy-associated symptoms, but little is known about the effects of passive smoking on this symptom. Passive smoking among women is widespread and severe in China due to the high proportion of men who smoke actively. The aim of this study is to examine the association between maternal passive smoking and severe NVP in early pregnancy among nonsmoking women in urban China. Methods: We collected information on passive smoking status and severe NVP in early pregnancy based on an ongoing prospective cohort study conducted from October 2017 to May 2019 in Beijing, China. We used multivariable logistic model to calculate adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) after controlling for confounding factors. Results: Among 3064 participants who were involved in the final analysis, 7.4% (n = 227) were passive smokers and 9.8% (n = 299) reported severe NVP. After adjusting for potential confounders, passive smoking conferred an increased risk of NVP (adjusted OR = 1.62, 95% CI: 1.08, 2.43). The frequency of exposure to second-hand smoke showed a positive relationship with the risk of severe NVP, and significant subgroup differences were also observed in stratified analyses by parity and education level. Conclusions: Our results suggested that maternal exposure to second-hand smoke remained to be a major public health problem in urban China, and that passive smoking during the first trimester may increase the risk of severe NVP among nonsmoking pregnant women. Measures should be taken to reduce the impact of second-hand smoke exposure on pregnant women.

RESUMO

We performed this study to clarify the dynamic changes in maternal manganese (Mn) concentration during pregnancy and its association with spontaneous preterm birth (SPB). A nested case-control study was conducted based on the Beijing Birth Cohort Study (BBCS) from 2018 to 2020. Singleton pregnancy women aged 18-44 (n = 488) were involved in the study, including 244 cases of SPB and 244 controls. All of the participants provided blood samples twice (in their first and third trimesters). Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used for the laboratory analysis, and unconditional logistic regression was used for the statistical analysis. We found that the maternal Mn levels were significantly higher in the third trimester than those in the first trimester (median: 1.23 vs. 0.81 ng/mL). The SPB risk was increased to 1.65 (95% CI: 1.04-2.62, p = 0.035) in the highest Mn level (third tertile) in the third trimester, especially in normal-weight women (OR: 2.07, 95% CI: 1.18-3.61, p = 0.011) or non-premature rupture of membrane (PROM) women (OR: 3.93, 95% CI: 2.00-7.74, p < 0.001). Moreover, a dose-dependent relationship exists between the SPB risk and maternal Mn concentration in non-PROM women (P trend < 0.001). In conclusion, dynamic monitoring of maternal Mn level during pregnancy would be helpful for SPB prevention, especially in normal-weight and non-PROM women.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) lobectomy is a common treatment for patients with early-stage lung cancer. Some patients can experience slight gastrointestinal discomfort after lobectomy for a moment. Gastroparesis is a gastrointestinal disorder that can be severe; it is associated with an increased risk of aspiration pneumonia and impaired postoperative recovery. Here, we report a rare case of gastroparesis after VATS lobectomy. CASE SUMMARY: A 61-year-old man underwent VATS right lower lobectomy uneventfully but had an obstruction of the upper digestive tract 2 d after surgery. Acute gastroparesis was diagnosed after emergency computed tomography and oral iohexol X-ray imaging. After gastrointestinal decompression and administration of prokinetic drugs, the patient's gastrointestinal symptoms improved. Since perioperative medication was applied according to the recommended dose and there was no evidence of electrolyte imbalance, intraoperative periesophageal vagal nerve injury was the most likely underlying cause of gastroparesis. CONCLUSION: Although gastroparesis is a rare perioperative complication following VATS, clinicians should be on the alert when patients complain about gastrointestinal discomfort. When surgeons resect paraesophageal lymph nodes with electrocautery, excessive ambient heat and compression of paraesophageal hematoma might induce vagal nerve dysfunction.

RESUMO

The timing of phenological events is highly sensitive to climate change, and may influence ecosystem structure and function. Although changes in flowering phenology among species under climate change have been reported widely, how species-specific shifts will affect phenological synchrony and community-level phenology patterns remains unclear. We conducted a manipulative experiment of warming and precipitation addition and reduction to explore how climate change affected flowering phenology at the species and community levels in an alpine meadow on the eastern Tibetan Plateau. We found that warming advanced the first and last flowering times differently and with no consistent shifts in flowering duration among species, resulting in the entire flowering period of species emerging earlier in the growing season. Early-flowering species were more sensitive to warming than mid- and late-flowering species, thereby reducing flowering synchrony among species and extending the community-level flowering season. However, precipitation and its interactions with warming had no significant effects on flowering phenology. Our results suggest that temperature regulates flowering phenology from the species to community levels in this alpine meadow community, yet how species shifted their flowering timing and duration in response to warming varied. This species-level divergence may reshape flowering phenology in this alpine plant community. Decreasing flowering synchrony among species and the extension of community-level flowering seasons under warming may alter future trophic interactions, with cascading consequences to community and ecosystem function.

RESUMO

Some research indicates that soil seed banks can promote species coexistence through storage effects. However, the seed bank mechanism that maintains plant assembly and its role in degraded grassland restoration are still not clear. We collected seed bank samples from early, mid and late secondary successional stages of an abandoned subalpine meadow on the Tibetan Plateau, and samples from each stage were exposed to full (i.e., natural), mid, and low light treatments in the field to represent light availability at the bottom/understory (soil surface) of a plant community in the early, mid and late stages of succession, respectively. Species richness, seed density, species composition, and community weighted mean values (CWMs) of seed mass of the species whose seeds germinated in soil samples were evaluated. In response to the light treatments, species richness increased significantly with increased light only for the late successional stage, seed density increased significantly with increased light only in the early and mid successional stages, and seed mass decreased significantly with increased light only in the mid and late successional stages. Species composition differed significantly among the light treatments only in the late successional stage. For the successional series, species richness and seed mass of the species that germinated increased significantly with succession only under mid and full light treatments. Seed density decreased significantly with succession in each light treatment. Species composition differed significantly between the early- and late stage and between the mid and late stage in each light treatment. Both the abiotic (light) and biotic (seed mass) factors influence seed bank recruitment to the plant community. Regeneration of small-seeded species in the seed bank was inhibited under low light in the late successional stage. The balance of stochastic and deterministic processes along a successional gradient was determined by regeneration from the seed bank depending on light intensity change. Differences in seed response to light intensity change largely determined plant community assembly. Our findings should help in the development of effective conservation and restoration strategies.

RESUMO

Introduction: Periconceptional use of multivitamins containing folic acid prevents external major birth defects, especially neural tube defects. We aimed to explore the effects of maternal folic acid supplementation alone on perinatal mortality with or without external major birth defects plus neural tube defects. Methods: From the China-US Collaborative Project for Neural Tube Defects Prevention, we identified 222, 303 singleton pregnancies with detailed information on periconceptional folic acid use, defined as folic acid supplementary before the last menstrual date until to the end of the first trimester. Perinatal mortality included stillbirths after 20 weeks' gestation and early neonatal deaths within 7 days of delivery. Results: Among the fetuses or infants of women who did not take folic acid, the rate of perinatal mortality was 2.99% and 1.62% at least 20 weeks' gestation in the northern and southern regions. Among the fetuses or infants of the women with periconceptional use of folic acid, the rates were 1.85% and 1.39% in the northern and southern region. The estimated relative risk for perinatal mortality [adjusted risk ratio (RR), 0.72; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.61- 0.85], stillbirth (adjusted RR, 0.78; 95% CI, 0.64-0.96), early neonatal mortality (adjusted RR, 0.61; 95% CI, 0.45-0.82), and neonatal death (adjusted RR, 0.64; 95% CI, 0.49-0.83) in northern China was significantly decreased in association with periconceptional folic acid supplementation. Compared with northern, there was a lesser effect in southern China. Conclusion: Periconceptional intake of 400µg folic acid daily reduces the overall risk perinatal mortality, as well as the risk from external major birth defects and neural tube defects, especially in northern China.
